Lots going on behind the scenes here, friends, and to that effect, there won’t be a Newsletter next week.
But let’s talk about what’s going on this week. For one thing, you’ve got a gonzo, pork-filled sci-fi comic adventure in the guise of the Mercenary Pig Graphic Novel: Book One.
Raised on a pig farm under deplorable conditions– one day “Percy” escapes and wonders into a near-by nuclear waste site, injests some “nuclear swill”, and mutates into a walking, talking, thinking humanoid pig– who becomes a mercenary specializing in animal rights infringements, hell-bent on eliminating all pig farms– starting with those of his former landlord and arch-nemesis, Horace. M. Fatback!

The Wall Street Journal posted an article today regarding a new experimental novel, CHOPSTICKS, which is being released both in print and digitally. But what makes this novel different is that the digital version allows users to enlarge images, flip through photo albums, watch video clips, listen to the characters’ favorite songs and read their instant messages.
With the growing popularity of eReaders and tablets, enhanced digital books appears to be the next logical step in offering readers a more interactive experience with their books. This could easily translate to digital comic books and graphic novels as well.
Only time (and sales) will tell if this new experimental way of reading a digital book is a success. Chances are, it will be the next frontier of both traditional book publishers and comic publishers.
What do you think? Post your thoughts below. Thanks!

The triumphant arrival of a brand new wednesday brings with it a treasure trove of new comics to read on Graphicly! This week, a little something for everybody. Roger Langridge’s Snarked! #3 is pitch perfect for all ages, while Seven Warriors #2 should sate the carnal yearnings of those surlier readers.
Today we’re particularly excited about Prophet #21 from Image. Don’t let the number fool you. This is the start of a new chapter in the adventures of John Prophet, Rip Van Winkle of Earth’s bleak future. As alien visitors feed on the devolved human populace, it’s up to Prophet to kick-start a revolution devised by the long-dead empire of man. Driven by instructions implanted in his dreams, he journey’s through a largely unfamiliar wilderness, battling fearsome mutants and beasts possessed by exotic parasites. He will eventually arrive in the organic city of Earth’s new sovereigns, a rotting behemoth nestled in the planet’s crust like a mouldering tick. Inside, a strange race of aliens and the next leg in his mission to win back his world.

(Press Release from Graphicly)
Graphicly is excited to announce the expansion of its innovative digital distribution platform to better meet the needs of authors and publishers of all types. The Graphicly platform offers automated self-publishing by converting, distributing and promoting image-based digital content across the most popular consumer mobile and eBook marketplaces including the Apple iOS Newsstand and iBooks, Barnes & Noble NOOK Color, Amazon Kindle store, the Google Android Marketplace, Facebook and many others, while streamlining the work flow, reducing production costs significantly and providing authors and publishers detailed real-time analytics. As the only platform that optimizes image-based content, Graphicly is uniquely poised to take advantage of the $23 billion publishing market, including the more than 300,000 self-published authors expected to produce a graphical work this year.
“Over the past few years, the team at Graphicly identified an unmet need in the digital publishing industry for automated tools to convert, distribute and promote image-based content,“ said Micah Baldwin, Graphicly founder and CEO. “By opening up our proven digital distribution platform, we now provide these services, while giving authors and publishers full control of their content and revenue streams and a deep understanding of how readers are engaging with their content. We believe our customer’s books should be available in every marketplace imaginable, with the knowledge and support to properly market and promote them.”

Pew Internet recently released a new study showing over a quarter of the US adult population owning either an eReader or tablet computer.
These figures show the growth in both markets has doubled for both eReaders and tablets since the previous year with the largest number of sales occurring around the holiday season. With no new iPad last year, this growth can be largely attributed to sales for both Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes and Noble’s Nook devices.
