At SXSW this past weekend, Marvel Comics unveiled their new digital initiative called Marvel ReEvolution which they hope will steal away some of the thunder (and sales) DC stole from them this past fall with the relaunch of their core line of titles. Marvel ReEvolution is essentially two new digital formats: one is the Marvel AR app (scheduled to be released this April for the iPad, smartphones, and tablets) which will allow the user to view augmented reality content and bonus material embedded in certain digital titles from Marvel, and Infinite Comics which provides the reader with a new approach to reading digital comics which was first seen in this video demonstration by Mark Waid. But will fans and readers embrace them?
This bold move signifies Marvel’s move into the growing tablet and digital markets. It could be said that Marvel used SXSW- seen by many as a “hip” and trendy conference / festival- as a way of separating themselves from their competition and, hopefully, be seen as something other than just a comics publisher. So Marvel deserves kudos for trying something new and audacious instead of waiting to announce these new digital comic formats at a popular comic convention (which is usually the case).
While the two digital formats seem like a possible progression in digital comics, neither seems to be something comic fans and readers have asked for or even needed. Read More…

One of the greatest authors of our time, Charles Dickens, use to sell his books one chapter at a time. He knew that people didn’t have much time to read in the early 1800s, since they spent so much time in the factories and avoiding horrible diseases. What he understood is that by selling his content in bite sized pieces and leaving the reader with a reason to read the next chapter, he would be successful. Oh, and boy was he. Digital comics give publishers and creators the ability to find the right amount of content to distribute each month. Did you know that most people only read about 8 pages every times they sit down to read a book digitally?
To that end, we are very excited to be working with Trajectory Comics and their Classics Illustrated. Hello Mr. Dickens.

(Press Release from Marvel Comics)
The Marvel ReEvolution is here—and comics will never be the same! The future of comic book publishing was unveiled yesterday to the raucous crowd at SXSW Interactive’ s ScreenBurn Arcade courtesy of industry superstars Axel Alonso (Editor in Chief, Marvel Comics), Peter Phillips (SVP/GM, Marvel Digital Media) and Jeph Loeb (Head of Marvel Television) during the historic Marvel: House of Ideas panel
An industry first, the Marvel ReEvolution seamlessly brings the worlds of print and digital media together for a comics experience like no other. The first two elements of this exciting new initiative were revealed as Marvel Infinite Comics, a new comic book format, and Marvel AR, the first major augmented reality app from a comics company. And fans will not have to wait long to get in on the action as they will both be released with the hotly-anticipated Avengers X-Men #1 on April 4th, when the two biggest Super Heroes teams in the world go to war!
“Marvel’s always led graphic fiction industry in digital media innovation and the Marvel ReEvolution is a quantum leap into the future of publishing,” said Dan Buckley. Publisher & President of the Print, Animation & Digital Divisions, Marvel Worldwide, Inc. “We see print and digital product as complementary, not competitive—so we’ve made sure that not only do we have new digital content but also digital products that enhance the printed page. The release of Avengers VS X-Men #1, the biggest story we’ve ever told, is the activation point for the re-evolution of comics as a whole.”

(Press Release from DC Comics)
Starting today, VERTIGO fans can download a new dedicated app featuring all Vertigo digital titles. The new app, available on the App Store, is free to download and features popular VERTIGO series THE SANDMAN, FABLES, Y: THE LAST MAN, PREACHER, 100 BULLETS, HELLBLAZER, AMERICAN VAMPIRE, THE UNWRITTEN, DMZ, THE INVISIBLES, TRANSMETROPOLITAN, and SWEET TOOTH, among others.
As an added bonus, readers who download the new VERTIGO app will have exclusive access to a three-day in-app sale that offers all SANDMAN digital comics for $.99 per issue. Written by #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman, THE SANDMAN is one of the most acclaimed titles in the history of comics. Norman Mailer described the series as “a comic strip for intellectuals.” With a rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, the series is considered to be one of the most original and artistically ambitious comic books of the modern age.
The launch of the app is timed to the release of four new VERTIGO series debuting each week this month, beginning with today’s publication of FAIREST by New York Times best-selling and award-winning writer Bill Willingham. A spin-off of FABLES, the series stars some of the fairest in the land and balances horror, humor and adventure. Each FAIREST storyline will explore the secret histories of one character, from Sleeping Beauty to Rapunzel to Cinderella to Thumbelina to Snow White and more. The first six issue arc drawn by Phil Jimenez (WONDER WOMAN, THE INVISIBLES) follows the misadventures of Briar Rose along with Ali Baba and the Snow Queen.
Also available same day digitally this month are the following new Vertigo series:
· SAUCER COUNTRY (VERTIGO / ongoing series / 32pg. / Color / $2.99), a dark thriller that blends UFO lore and alien abduction with political intrigue, all set in the hauntingly beautiful Southwest written by Paul Cornell (DEMON KNIGHTS, Doctor Who) with art by Ryan Kelly (NEW YORK FIVE).
